Glacial Iceberg from Mendenhall Glacier

Arriving in Juneau (the capital of Alaska) was exciting because it was our first port of call in Alaska. Also exciting because we were to observe the Mendenhall Glacier formed from the Juneau Ice fields. We could only see a small portion of the 13 mile long glacier but it was spectacular. This picture shows a large chuck of ice that has broken away from the face of the glacier - a process called calving. The lake was full of pieces of ice and was so picturesque.

It is hard to describe something so beautiful except to say it was awe inspiring to look at. I was finally able to see some ice and snow. I guess in my minds eye I expected Alaska to have more snow and ice and was pleasantly surprised to see steep sided mountains and lush vegetation. But then it is the end of the summer.

The next stop on our tour was a Salmon Bake. This was well organized picnic area in the forest. We had warm cider to drink and our plates crammed with corn bread, coleslaw, pasta caesar salad, pickles and olives and of course barbequed salmon fillets glazed with brown sugar, butter and pineapple juice - magnificent! Even better was the pre-luncheon clam chowder.

Nadine ran off to see a wild bear which came roaming into the picnic area. Too quick for a photograph. I missed it, except for his/her snout. Well at least we saw a wild bear!

I couldn't match Nadine's exquisite purchase so I settled for a cashmere sweater on sale. Also purchased the mandatory t-shirts and caps! More later!
