Our last port of call was Ketchikan Alaska. I heard a local joke: A tourist met a young girl in Ketchikan and asked how long it had been raining. "I don't know" said the little girl "I am only 5!"
Yes it rained the whole time. So we chose to do the one tour where that didn't matter. We went snorkeling. Well it seemed a good idea at the time.
Nine brave (foolish) souls had chosen the snorkeling adventure as the Ketchikan tour. We were driven to the dive shop and suited up in 7mm wet suits complete with bootees hood and gloves. Just getting dressed felt like an extreme sport. Then off to the 'beach' a rocky foreshore on an inlet. We were standing on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in Alaska ready to get wet. The only exposed skin a small amount between our hood and our mask. The water was COLD.
We were in the water just over an hour and swam through an amazing kelp forrest saw a ton of star fish from a tiny six legged specimen that only grows to about 2 cm up to a sunflower star which can grow up to a meter across. We also saw fish, jelly fish, crabs and a variety of shell fish. A very different experience to tropical diving but cold climate snorkeling was quite an experience.
Back into town after we dried off and warmed up. The rain was heavy and constant. One funny sight was a couple of dozen pigeons sheltering in the doorway of the cinema.
Another beautiful clean friendly town with gorgeous colorful wooden buildings.
So leaving Alaska we have another full day cruising before disembarking in Vancouver
That's all for now
Love to you all. Nadine
